Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the purpose and scope of the NFPA 70E standard.
  2. Identify the key hazards associated with electrical work.
  3. Describe and apply safety-related work practices and procedures.
  4. Select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) based on the potential electrical hazards.
  5. Understand the importance of an Electrical Safety Program and its key components.
  6. Differentiate between different categories of electrical work and their associated safety requirements.
  7. Understand the principles of arc flash and arc blast, and the steps to mitigate their risks.
  8. Apply NFPA 70E guidelines in practical workplace scenarios.

Course Outline

Day 1

  1. Introduction to NFPA 70E — history and purpose; scope and application.
  2. Understanding Electrical Hazards — shock, arc flash, arc blast, electrocution.
  3. Safety-Related Work Practices — energized vs. de-energized work; establishing an electrically safe work condition; Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures; approach boundaries and their significance.
  4. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) — importance of PPE in electrical safety; selection based on hazard/risk category; care, maintenance, and inspection of PPE.
  5. Principles of Arc Flash & Arc Blast — causes and characteristics; risk assessment and labeling; incident energy calculation and understanding arc flash boundaries.

Day 2 6. Electrical Safety Program — importance and purpose; key components and documentation; job safety planning and risk assessment procedures. 7. Equipment-Specific Safety Measures — safe work practices for specific equipment (switchboards, panelboards, industrial control panels, etc.); equipment labeling and interpretation. 8. Case Studies & Practical Scenarios — real-life incidents and lessons learned; hands-on scenarios to apply NFPA 70E guidelines. 9. Maintenance & Continuous Improvement — importance of regular maintenance for safety; auditing and updating safety programs. 10. Closing and Certification — hands-on student demonstration of proficiency; final exam; certificate of completion.
